Scotty Laketroller 1073 manual downrigger
- light weight
- Perfect for small boat
- easy to mount
- hard to operate
The unit is well-built and provides sturdy enough support for a 3-4 lb. weight. The holder can be mounted sideways against the gunnel just like Scotty’s popular rod holders, so it is very convenient. However, if you have an aluminum boat and mount directly to the side, the motor vibrations can transfer directly down the cable and create a strange buzzing noise. I had no problems with the braking. In fact, you can tighten the nut just enough to hold the weight while still keeping it loose enough to crank up or down. The biggest drawback on this unit is the large drag angle resulting from the small weight. At 2.5 mph I had a hard time getting the ball to ride below 12-16 feet (as seen on my depth finder). The water friction and lure friction just want to push the weight up and you can easily see the cable angle expand as you lower the weight or pull a heavier lure. Sometimes the weight would drag too far behind the boat and would disappear from the fish finder. Light, lip less lures performed the best, but you need to keep them close to the line release. I think the best application for this product is on a canoe, kayak, row boat, or trolling motor-powered boat where you go slow and have no choice but to go light. My advice is if your boat can handle it and you have the money, go larger and you can’t go wrong. If you fish relatively shallow lakes or need to save money, this unit has the best functionality at the lowest price point.
Works great for me. Much easier to deal with changing depth then messing with a lead core rig. Being able to mount it on Scotty rod holder mounts is a huge plus. Able to swivel it around to get the ball inside or quickly take it off for storage is nice.
The spool is real easy to adjust for tension and depth. I mounted it just aft of my sonar head so I can see the ball on my screen.
Because the unit fit all the requirements I had for it. Small, light weight, easy to mount and inexpensive. Perfect. Works awesome on canoe, just what I needed.
This product works great for my kayak and light weight lures. All I had to do is mount it with a flush mount and find various weights for different lures and speeds in use with my drift sock.
1 part of three components needed for down rigger use on my kayak. Works as advertised. No bells and whistles, but it works. And It fit perfectly on my kayak. I painted a spot on the wire every 10 feet so I would know my depth.
